Ice Crystal

Here it is completed.  A great design by Blomqvist and Persson that is tatted in one pass. I'm such a fan of one pass designs!  Very clever.

The chains that link the centre medallion to the outer diamond shapes have to be straighter than their natural curve which means there is some tension there and those chains do not lie perfectly but apart from that I'm pretty happy with it.

If I was making it again, I might try to tat the bottom joining chain between repeats the other way (as in the pattern) instead of reversed as I chose to make them. I still think it needs a bit of adjustment in that area and it would be worth remaking.

Best wishes,
Frivole

  1. Gorgeous! 'One pass' ? As in, you do the entire thing at one time with two shuttles? Or is this needle. I've been tatting for years, but I'm pretty much self taught and don't really get stuff like 'mock rings' and such.

    1. Yes, that's right, the entire thing one one go with two shuttles. And no fancy techniques, just rings and chains that's all. :-)

    3. Hi, it's from the book "Tatting Patterns and Designs" by Gun Blomqvist and Elwy Persson which is still available for purchase I believe.

  2. It turned out beautifully! Your perseverance paid off, for sure. It's not very big, somehow I thought it was larger.

    1. Thank you Michelle. No, not huge but not a bad width for a one pass design at 8.5 inches across in size 20 thread.

    2. Just finished it yesterday and posted it to my blog today. I can send you a scan of my hand drawn diagram if you wanted to make the Sunflower doily. Warning though...it's made in three rounds and requires some blocking.

  4. Outstanding!! It's fabulous that these designs are coming to life today with expert tatting, new threads, and modern photography. They were designed so well, and thanks to tatters like yourself, they are getting the attention and admiration that they deserve! Your patience and perseverance certainly paid off! I hope to revisit the 'cover' pattern of this book that I mentioned in my comment on your previous post.

    1. Hi Kathy, thank you for your comment. Yes the cover design is also interesting and I've always wanted to make the clover leaf one too. In fact there are several I'd like to tackle from this book so hopefully I'll have more to show in the near future.

  5. Gorgeous piece of work! Congratulations on the finish line! :) We do not have such beautiful shuttles here where I reside. Do you have a source for your shuttles?

    1. Hi Paula, thank you for your comment. I make the shuttles myself and I sell them through my Etsy shop: www.etsy.com/shop/lacossette. I am away at the moment though so there are no "shippable" items for sale but I will be back soon!

  8. Gorgeous! I've had this book for 25 years and have never made this particular piece, but yours is so inspiring I'm going to dig the book out right now.
